Take a Deep Dive into Dallas District 8 Voter Purging

Dallas City Council District 8 encompasses a heavily Black area of the "Southern Sector" of Dallas.

Dallas County Elections reported that 4,360 registered voters voted in the 2020 General Election.

Of those, 1,353 absentee voters were reported purged from the Vote Roster by Dallas County Elections after they had voted. An additional 147 in-person voters were purged from the Vote Roster 1 day to 2 weeks after they voted.

Fifteen absentee "voters" also voted with BLANK voterIDs.

We reached out to the incumbent District 8 City Council member and his three challengers in the May election for comments on the voter purging.

Tennel Atkins Sabrina Lynn
Lakolya London Davante Peters

We asked these questions:

1. What issue is more important to the constituents of District 8 than voter suppression?
2. Have you contacted the Dallas County Commissioners, Dallas County Elections, or the District Attorney for an explanation?
3. How confident are you that voters for you will not be suppressed in the May election?

We will post their replies as they are received.

UPDATE
03/19 - District 8 candidate, Davante Peters, contacted the ORP and asked many questions. He says he will be asking Dallas leaders for an explanation.

03/24 - Mr. Peters reported that Dallas County Elections explained the purging of 1,450 votgers by claiming that they were purged because they had not voted in two years.

First of all Dallas does not remove voters from registration just because they have not voted.

Second, the voters listed above were purged AFTER they had already cast votes, NOT BEFORE. If they were not legally registered they would have not been able to vote in-person or to be mailed an absentee ballot.

Third, you can inspect the voting history of purged voters listed in the links above and confirm that most of those purged voters had active voting histories.

As always if you know something say something, and say it to The Open Records Project.WHISTLEBLOWER@openrecords.org.
